The Upper Shari’a Court sitting in Samaru area of Gusau, Zamfara State has refused to grant bail to the state Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Ibrahim Goga, currently in prison custody for allegedly defaming Governor Bello Matawalle.
In continuation of the hearing of the case on Thursday, the Presiding Judge, Alhaji Abdulhadi Gusau said Goga should remain in prison pending the outcome of the bail application filed by his counsel before the High Court seeking.
According to the judge, since Goga’s lawyer had written to the High Court seeking for his bail, it would not be appropriate for him to continue with the case until after the decision of the High Court.
Recall that Goga was arraigned before the court two weeks ago for allegedly defaming Matawalle as well as inciting public disturbance.
According to Matawalle’s counsel, Ibrahim Haruna, Goga had held a press conference where he castigated the state governor and wanted to cause public disturbance, actions said to be contrary to Sections 287 and 142 of the Shari’a Penal Code.
Ibrahim told the court that the text of the said press conference was published by both conventional and social media outfits.
