The Bill was sponsored by the Chairman Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory(FCT), Sen. Dino Melaye. In the lead debate, Sen. Melaye said the amendment of the Act had become necessary in view of the need to make lottery regime in the country effective and efficient. He also said that making lottery effective and efficient in the country would help maximise funds for the running of the economy. “Lottery in this country has the capacity to generate income as much as crude oil but because of the corruption involved, we have not been able to generate what we are supposed to generate. “ It is unfortunate that in the past where lottery companies are given tens of millions of Naira, only peanut was paid into the coffers of government. “The peculiarity of lottery operations is such that a significant amount of money is paid into the trust fund, which is mainly established for social development projects. “With this amendment we will also be able to automate the funds that should accrue to government, because we are in a change era where government is looking for ways to generate income,’’ he said.]]>
