The theme was basically “Consumer Protection and Economic Development, the need for Media intervention’ while the subthemes include, Best practices for the implementation of consumer-protection policies and regulation in a converging environment; Regulation & amp; Legislation in the Manufacturing Industry: Ensuring Fair Trade & Consumer Protection, and ‘Consumer Rights & Sustainable Air Services: Policy Reform In The Aviation Sector’ The chairperson of NBA Lawyers In Media, Theodora Ibifuro Kio-Lawson in delivering her welcome address described the relationship between the media and law as a dynamic one, hence the idea to partner with law firms for these quarterly engagements are strategic to strengthening the existing relationship between Law and Media. She said LIM programmes are geared towards law and economical development, with the media as a viable tool and this roundtable attempts to expose critical issues and regulatory challenges in the reform of the manufacturing and aviation sectors, competition in sector, guidelines, safeguards rights and interests in consumer protection, the role of the media as well as the limitations of the Consumer Protection Act. Also that Lawyers In the Media Forum is one of the specialist fora of the Nigerian Bar Association set up to drive policies that affect media practice and media practitioners in Nigeria. It also aims to encourage and deepen multi-disciplinary approaches to solving media related issues in Nigeria; to effectively enhance the contribution of Legal Practitioners who are also Media Practitioners; and to constantly promote and add value to the practice of journalism in Nigeria. Speaking further, she said that “with an appreciation of global media trends, a strategy for building strong media partnerships and institutions, and a commitment to serve, the Lawyers in the Media Forum is set to make an impact and bring about change in Nigeria.” LIM comprises of members of the legal profession who are also media practitioners in both print and electronic media houses, with the objective of promoting the principles of both professions for the development of society. “Media and particularly the NBA Lawyers In the Media Forum is happy and willing to collaborate with government agencies and other consumer protection groups around the country,” Theodora added. Amongst the honoured guest at the LIM roundtable were the Hon. Chief Judge of Edo State; Justice Esohe Ikponwen, The Solicitor-General of Edo State, Augustine Alegeh SAN, Seni Adio SAN, Afam Osigwe, Bolaji Ojibara, the Chairman of NBA Benin Branch, Prof. A. D Badaiki (Former Dean Post Graduate School at AAU, Ekpoma), the Dean of Law of UNIBEN and Edo State University. Each giving their brief remarks and congratulating NBA-LIM for organising such an intriguing and apt roundable discussion. The activities of the event were; Media Business Series, Breakfast Meetings, Networking Cocktail Events, Career Talks and an Annual LIM Summit where they partner with key stakeholders across various industries and sectors.]]>
