He also expressed concern that we talk more of the process ‎used to let the Nigerian public know that all is not well. Have we all not agreed that all is not well. Nobody has suggested that these gentlemen are being persecuted for spartan judicial life style. According to the Senior Advocate, many ‎there are many judicial officers of credit and repute. Nigerians should concern themselves more about how to have good and credible men and women on the Bench who can resist temptation. He said, for some judicial officers to allow themselves to be influenced is a great disservice to this nation. As Hon. Justice Muhammadu Lawal Uwais said : A corrupt judge is more harmful to the society than a man who runs amok with a dagger in a crowded street. The latter can be restrained physically. But a corrupt judge deliberately destroys the moral foundation of society and causes incalculable distress to individuals through abusing his office while still being referred to as honourable. To him, there is serious danger in allowing a corrupt judge remain on the Bench. Oputa JSC (of blessed memory) put it more bluntly and succinctly thus: “No one should go to the bench to amass wealth, for money corrupts and pollutes not only the channels of justice but also the very stream itself”. Okutepa SAN, further reiterated that, it is a calamity to have a corrupt judge. The passing away of a great advocate does not pose such public danger as the appearance of a corrupt judge on the bench, for in the latter instance, the public interest is bound to suffer and elegant justice is mocked, debased, depreciated and auctioned. When justice is bought and sold, there is no more hope for society. For him, what our society needs is an honest, trusted ‎trusted and trustworthy Judiciary. Those of us who guinuinely practice in our courts know what goes on in some Courts. Some of us don’t go to some judges courts not because we don’t like doing our jobs but because you don’t know law in some of these courts. The language of the judgement depends on what is offered and not the settled principle of law. While I will always defend the judiciary it will be difficult to offer the best of defence in favour of a judicial officer whose conduct and life style suggests evidence of corruption. It is my thinking that we need to decide and come to agreement on what we want as a people. Do we want undiluted and unpolluted stream of Justice then we must have judicial officers who are above board.]]>
