…demands N500m compensation An Akure-based legal practitioner, Mr Morakinyo Ogele, has dragged the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to court over the death of a suspect, Razak Ahmed, in the custody of the Ondo State Command of the corps. Ahmed was arrested last month by the personnel of the NSCDC in the state for allegedly having incestuous affair with one of his daughters. But the suspect reportedly died in the custody of the corps in Akure. The family alleged that he was tortured to death by officers of the command while trying to extract confessional statements from him. However, the command denied the family’s allegation, saying the suspect committed suicide while in its custody. Following the incident, Ogele approached the state High Court in Akure on behalf of the family to seek justice. The human rights lawyer is praying the court to order the NSCDC to identify the officers responsible for the arrest, detention and alleged torture of the deceased to death. He is also seeking an order for the corps to hand over the officers, who allegedly tortured the deceased to death, to the police for proper investigation and prosecution. The lawyer wants the court to order the NSCDC to pay N500m as compensation to the family of the deceased and to subject all its officers to psychiatric test and stop them from torturing suspects in order to obtain confessional statements from them. He said, “The family members of the deceased have been calling on human rights organisations to help them get justice. This is because the NSCDC is trying to cover up this extra-judicial killing. It felt unconcerned about the gruesome act against the family of the deceased. “The NSCDC spokesman declared that the man committed suicide in its custody without giving evidence. The NSCDC, is a security agency established to protect lives and properties in Nigeria, therefore, its officers are not expected to take any life. “ Ogele noted in a 33-paragraph affidavit that he initiated the suit on behalf of the deceased’s family and in public interest.]]>
