The Lagos State Judicial Service Commission led by the Chief Judge of Lagos State is presently holding a judicial retreat at the University of Ottawa, Canada.

The 2019 retreat which is for members of the state commission with the theme, ”Theme: Appointment and Discipline in Judicial Officers Cadre: Canadian Insights for Lagos State”,’ is expected to last for three days starting from today, the 30th day of April 2019.

Today’s lecture is ”Building judicial institutions- locating the judicial service commission”, delivered by Professor Chidi Oguamanam, Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa, while tomorrow lecture will be delivered by Ms. Marilyn King, Registrar, Ontario Judicial Service Council and Justice of Peace Review Council.

Professor Carissima Mathen, Associate Dean, (academic) Faculty of law University of Ottawa, on the other hand, will deliver the lecture on ”Constitutional landscape for the appointment and discipline of judges in Canada”, the same day. Also on the last day, the members of the Commission will visit the Canadian Senate, Supreme Court and a reception at the residence of the Nigerian High Commissioner, Ottawa.

The event is expected to build capacity and strengthen the ties between the Canadian Judicial Bodies and the Lagos State Government Judiciary; it is also aimed at having an insight from the Canadian perspective to improve the Nigerian Judiciary, particularly Lagos State, as the pacesetter for the judiciary in Nigeria.
