The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Imohimi Edgal says the command will end the abuse of citizens by some bad officers in the State Police Force.
Speaking at a joint press conference with the Ikeja branch of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA to douse tension over the brutality of a lawyer, Mr. Fatai Adeyemi Abijo by officers of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Taskforce at Oshodi, Lagos State, Mr. Edgal promised the NBA that he will look into the allegation leveled against some members of the Lagos Taskforce and ensure justice.
The briefing was held in place of a planned procession by the lawyers to protest against increasing incidents of abuse and gross violation of human rights of citizens by police officers.
The Chairman of the NBA, Ikeja branch, Mr. Adesina Ogunlana said the cancelled protest was planned to beam searchlight on the activities of some police officers and not to scandalise the law enforcement agency.
He however commended the CP for rising to the occasion.
“The CP has demonstrated good faith with us. We called off the protest to give respect to his CP office. Many citizens have been visited with police brutality and all these should stop.
The police that is trusted and loved is the police that will deliver. The quality resource of the police is human intelligent. When police becomes our friend, the citizen will also help them in community policing,” he said.
The commissioner of police recognised the NBA as a vital partner in the dispensation of justice.
“You are vital partners in dispensation of of criminal justice. I was worried when I heard the NBA were calling for a general protest against police. I was not against the protest but the nature of the protest,” the CP said.
Adding that,”It is your right to call the attention of the police to where we are lacking. The only way we can gain the trust of the people is by ensuring we operates professionally and be guided by laws.
“I have detained the Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, and his team responsible for this incident and they are facing trials. We are partners in ensuring there is justice. I am calling on Lagosians to continue to report policemen as per unprofessional attitudes and failures to respond to respond to emergency.”
