The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), backed by Governor Alex Otti, has emerged as the clear winner in the recently concluded local government elections in Abia State, securing victory in 15 out of the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs). The Young Peoples Party (YPP) claimed the remaining two LGAs, leaving the Labour Party in disarray.
Prof. George Chima, the Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), announced the results at the commission’s headquarters in Umuahia, the state capital, on Saturday. He commended the efforts of the commission in conducting the election, stating, “We have fulfilled the duty we were inaugurated on September 5 to carry out. It wasn’t an easy task, but we went above and beyond to raise awareness about the election across the state.”
Chima highlighted the significance of the election, noting that it was a milestone for the commission to have over 12 political parties participating in recent times. He confirmed that the election was held across all 17 LGAs and described it as “free, fair, and credible.”
The commission chairman praised the efforts of the team, acknowledging that they were able to complete a task that could typically take six to twelve months within a span of just two months. He congratulated both the winners and the opposition, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace in Abia State.
“In any election, there are winners and losers, but the most important thing is that Abia remains peaceful. I urge everyone to uphold this peace,” Chima said. He also expressed gratitude to the security agencies for their support and commended the political parties for “playing by the rules.”
The overwhelming victory of the Zenith Labour Party, which was proxy-sponsored by Governor Alex Otti, has left the Labour Party in turmoil. This development comes as a significant blow to the Labour Party, which has been grappling with internal leadership crises and now faces the prospect of a potential collapse in Abia State.
As the political landscape in Abia State continues to shift, the future of the Labour Party remains uncertain, with Governor Otti’s support for the Zenith Labour Party candidates proving to be a decisive factor in the local government elections.
