Knowing their limits, Justice Kayode-Ogunmekan said, would help lawyers and judges “to preserve the guiding principles of the legal profession.” The retired judge, according to a statement on Wednesday by the Lagos State Judiciary, gave this admonition on the occasion of the valedictory court session held in her honour on April 29, 2016 at the foyer of the state high court in Igbosere. Justice Kayode-Ogunmekan, who attributed her success as a legal practitioner and then on the bench to the grace of God, also advocated better welfare packages not only for judges but also for lawyers. In her remarks, the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Olufunmilayo Atilade, described the retired judge as “a woman with profound intellectual depth of knowledge of the legal jurisprudence and an eloquent demonstrator of fair judgments and judicial pronouncements.” Atilade praised the retired judge, whose resourcefulness, she said, was brought to bear on her job on the bench and which proved invaluable and earned her respect. “Not only has our retiree proved her worth as a jurist of immense quality, Her Ladyship has also stood the test of time. A woman of excellence with a keen eye for details, whose strength of character was ably exemplified in her reliability, uprightness and forthrightness. Little wonder that she is loved and admired by all, including her brother and sister judges in the Lagos State Judiciary,” Justice Atilade said. On his own part, the Chairman of the Lagos branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Martin Ogunleye, said Justice Kayode-Ogunmekan proved herself as an asset to the Lagos State High Court bench and was a promoter of reconciliation. “We, at the Lagos branch of the NBA, wish you a deserved rest and blissful retirement after 38 years of fruitful and rewarding public service; you have played your part and history .
