The Chief Whip of Kano State House of Assembly, Ayuba Durum, has broken his silence over misspelled number plate attributed to him, saying neither the vehicle nor the number plate belongs to him.

The misspelled number plate has caused a social media storm, with commenters either blaming Mr. Durum or FRSC for allowing it to pass the rigours of quality control.

Speaking exclusively to DAILY NIGERIAN, Mr Durum said the vehicle could not be his as the state government is yet to give official vehicles to the members.

“I was baffled by a torrent of messages drawing my attention to a gaffe on a number plate purported to be mine.

“To set the records straight, members of the Kano State House of Assembly are yet to be assigned any official vehicles.

“I use my private vehicle with a regular not customised number plate. My vehicle registration number is Gaya, Kano, and whoever knows me can verify this,” he said.

The legislator said he had directed his lawyers to get to the roots of the matter and take appropriate legal action.

Earlier on Sunday, the Federal Road Safety Corps disowned a misspelt customized number plate and ordered for investigation.

A statement by the spokesman for the corps, Bisi Kazeem, said the number plate in question was not produced by FRSC.

“The attention of FRSC has been drawn to the above number plate with wrong spelling of CHIP WHIP instead of CHIEF WHIP.

“We wish to inform the general public that this particular number plate was not produced by FRSC and could not have been from us as a lead agency of elites in traffic management, we are therefore clarifying clearly of our not having anything to do with the said plate as it is been insinuated in certain social media platforms.

“Furthermore, the Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi has directed the Sector Commander of Kano to investigate the origin of the purported fake number plate and thereafter bring the perpetrators to book while ordering all field commands to clampdown on fake number plates,” Mr Kazeem added.
