A newspaper and some online publications had on February 12 quoted sources in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as crediting Col. Adegbe with saying that: “If I open up Nigeria will burn and could surpass what is known as Dasukigate.” In a petition to the Sun Newspaper through his counsel James Onoja (SAN), Adegbe demanded a retraction of the publication in seven editions of the paper, and the sum of N1 billion as damages within 48 hours. Adegbe, who expressed shock at the ‘malicious’ and ‘rumour mongering’ claims that he was arrested in Lagos on a visit from a course, explained that he had been attending a course in the UK and willingly arrived the country on the invitation of the Nigerian Army to clarify certain allegations made against him with the EFCC. He explained that two senior counsels and a senior army officer from the Provost Marshal’s office were present throughout his interrogation by the EFCC, and wondered where the statement credited to him came from. “Our client is therefore at a great loss as to where your reporters got the statement credited to him threatening to open his mouth to Nigeria or to open new can of worms that could surpass Dasukigate,” the counsel said. Following the arrest of former National Security Adviser (NSA) under the Jonathan administration in July, 2015 over alleged diversion of $2.1 billion funds believed to be for military equipment, several top serving and retired military officers have been questioned by the EFCC.]]>
