The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has taken to its official X account (@DHQNigeria) to remind Nigerians of the honor in serving in the armed forces, hours after a heated confrontation between Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and military personnel at a disputed construction site in Gaduwa District, Abuja.

The post, accompanied by images of uniformed soldiers in action, emphasized the professionalism, discipline, and commitment expected of officers, sparking online debate over the timing and possible connection to Tuesday’s incident. Supporters hailed it as a tribute to the bravery of the officers involved, while critics interpreted it as a veiled rebuke of the minister.

The confrontation occurred when Wike, during a routine inspection to halt what he described as an unauthorized building project on land allegedly linked to a former Chief of Naval Staff, was blocked from entering the site by soldiers acting on “orders from above.” The minister, accompanied by officials from the FCT Administration (FCTA), insisted that the development lacked the necessary approvals from the Development Control Department, rendering it illegal.

The standoff escalated into a heated verbal exchange widely circulated online, with Wike shouting at an officer to “shut up” and calling him “a fool.” The officer maintained composure, responding that he was acting on orders. The incident highlighted tensions between civilian authority and military discipline.

Following the altercation, Wike contacted top military officials, including the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Chief of Naval Staff, reportedly receiving assurances that the matter would be resolved promptly. He condemned the use of troops to enforce civilian disputes as “intimidation” and “blackmail,” asserting that “we cannot allow lawlessness, regardless of who is involved.”

Military veterans have since echoed the DHQ’s emphasis on professionalism, calling on Wike to issue a public apology for undermining the chain of command. Former Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd.) criticized the minister’s approach, warning it risks eroding the authority of the Commander-in-Chief.
