Daily Law Tips (Tip 450) by Onyekachi Umah, Esq., LLM. ACIArb(UK)

IT IS A CRIMINAL OFFENCE TO HAVE HOUSE HELPS, MAIDS AND DOMESTIC WORKERS IN NIGERIA THAT ARE LESS THAN 12 YEARS.

Nigerians and Nigerian laws frown at child labour and abuse. Often, families engage children and young persons as house helps, maids and workers under the disguise that such children will be sent to school and or paid. Such practise/arrangement is now a criminal offence in Nigeria.

It is a criminal offence in all parts of Nigeria, to employ, recruit, transport, harbour, receive or hire any human being in Nigeria that is less than 12 years old as a house-help, maid, domestic worker or staff of any appellation. This offence is punishable with imprisonment for not less than 6 months but not more than 7 years.

Apart from Nigerian Police, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) can entertain such cases. Report such cases to them and always consult your lawyer.

My authority is sections 23(1) (a) and 82 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.
