*Dr Rosemary Says The VMS Is Targeted At Helping Masses To Access Justice Without Going Through The Rigors Of The Court

The President of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC), Dr. Agada Elachi, has said that the Volunteer Mediator Scheme (VMS) of the Institute is aimed at offering a platform for “speedy and at no cost resolution of small claims disputes for the business community, as well as matters bordering on domestic disputes and interpersonal conflicts.”

He said this on Friday 11th June, 2021, during the launch of the scheme at Abuja Branch of ICMC which held at Dele Oye Hall of ACCI Convention Centre, Abuja.

Elachi promised, as a mark of his commitment to the success of the VMS, to attend the launch of the scheme in all the branches of the institution in person, should they be ready.

On the benefit of the scheme to members of the Institute, Elachi explains that, “the scheme among other benefits will provide our members especially young mediators with the opportunity to practice and horn their skills and deploy same for the benefit of the less endowed of society.”

Thus, he encouraged members to apply through the leadership of their respective branches in order to participate in the scheme.

“It is worthy of note that the planned ICMC composition of neutrals will be drawn from this exercise. To this end, we have inaugurated the neutral selection committee headed by the predecessor in office, Chief Emeka Obegolu to drive the neutral selection process.

“Members who participate in the scheme and can demonstrate competence and proficiency will be encouraged to apply to the Committee to be listed as neutrals. The list of neutrals when compiled will be available on our website and shared with other stakeholders. This in all is geared towards ensuring standardization and quality control.” Elachi said
