A 29-year-old Nigerian man is in custody after a horrific family attack in New Orleans that left his 75-year-old father dead and his two sisters injured. Chukwuebuka Eweni faces charges of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder following the stabbing incident on November 11, 2025.

The victim, Samuel Eweni, was a respected computer science professor at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO). Family members confirmed to local outlet WWL Louisiana that the attack unfolded at their home in the 8000 block of Pebble Drive in the Little Woods neighborhood. What began as an ordinary Tuesday evening turned deadly when Eweni allegedly grabbed a knife and assaulted his father and sisters.
One sister has been released from the hospital, while the other remains under treatment but is expected to survive, according to relatives and police reports. The New Orleans Police Department responded to the scene around 9:59 p.m. after reports of an aggravated battery in a domestic incident. Officers found Samuel Eweni unresponsive with at least one fatal stab wound, and the two sisters suffering from stab injuries.
Family members described Chukwuebuka Eweni as having a long history of mental illness but no prior violent behavior. “He has never been violent,” they told reporters, expressing shock over the unprovoked attack. They said they were unaware of the incident at first because Eweni sought help at New Orleans East Hospital, where he routinely checked himself in for mental health treatment, before being transferred to a facility in Jefferson Parish. Authorities tracked him down there and took him into custody on Wednesday morning, November 12.
The NOPD detailed the charges in its official statement. “Through investigation, NOPD Homicide Section detectives have developed and positively identified Eweni as the perpetrator in this incident and have obtained an arrest warrant on one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.” Eweni, born September 23, 1996, was described as armed and dangerous in initial alerts before his capture.
SUNO released a heartfelt statement mourning the loss of Dr. Samuel Eweni. “Dr. Eweni was more than an educator. He was a mentor and a guiding light to many of our students,” said Chancellor Joseph Bouie Jr. “His contributions to the College of Business and Public Administration and to the university’s mission of transforming lives through education will be remembered and celebrated. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this deeply difficult time.”
The incident has drawn attention to mental health challenges within immigrant communities, with relatives emphasizing the need for stronger support systems. The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office confirmed Samuel Eweni’s identity as one of two unrelated deaths that night, the other a shooting victim.
