Governor Siminalayi Fubara has said that a new political structure that is people-oriented will emerge in Rivers State after the local government election slated for October 5.
The governor made this statement when he received members of ‘The Simplicity Movement’ led by Chief Sobomabo Jackrich, a candidate of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) in the 2023 gubernatorial election, at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.
Responding to the level of public support demonstrated by the group, Fubara promised to continue to defend the integrity of the state in the face of ongoing political challenges. “We must defend the dignity of our state, we must ensure that the commonwealth of this state belongs to everyone. This is the reason for our slogan ‘Rivers First’,” the governor said.
He urged the electorate to freely participate in the election, which he said would help his administration chart the second phase of its struggle.
Fubara’s loyalists are contesting the local government election on the platform of the Action People’s Party (APP) instead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party on which platform Fubara was elected into office. This follows the takeover of the structure of the PDP in Rivers by former governor and incumbent FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who has been involved in a struggle to control the political structure in the state with Fubara.
The governor had allegedly directed his loyalists who are in caretaker committees to contest the election on the platform of the APP.
The outcome of the local government election is expected to have significant implications for the political landscape in Rivers State and the ongoing power struggle between Governor Fubara and former Governor Wike.
