It will take place in America University, Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria between 25th and 29th July. The competition at the global level is being organised annually by the University College, London while that of Nigeria’s version is being organised by the National Mathematical Centre Abuja The brilliant students however are Michael Omolaja (500-level), Mary Akinade( 500L), Segun Ofe (500L)and Desmond Dike(300L) and all from the Department of Mathematics. While Michael won gold medal, the duo of Mary and Segun won silver medal each and Desmond won bronze medal at the event held in Abuja. And the duo of Dr. Babatope Omolofe and Mr. Ayodeji Afolabi from the same department supervised them. They beat their peers numbering 96 from 23 other universities to win a place in the global contest. The competition according to the university’s spokesman, Mr. Adebanjo Adegbenro would consist of two sessions of five hours each with problems from the field of Algebra, Real and Complex Analysis, Geometry and Combinatorics with about 80 countries participating. Disclosing the secret to success, Omolaja, the gold medalist who is on a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.69 out of the possible 5.0 said the though team depended on God, worked with winning spirit. The team however promised to come back to Nigeria with medals. Expressing happiness on the achievement, FUTA’s Vice- Chancellor, Professor Adebiyi Daramola congratulated the team and assured them of total support from the institution. He described the feat as a big boost to the university image and testimony to its excellence in academic matters.]]>
