As part of the nomination for the Nigerian Legal Awards 2021, ESQ has opened nominations and is therefore calling for nomination of exceptional young lawyers who are under forty years of age and who will shape the future of the legal profession.

According to Lere Fashola, convener of the Nigerian Legal Awards, The Nigerian Rising Stars Award recognises 40 outstanding lawyers of Nigerian decent who are below the age of 40 and who have shown very early in their professional life those leadership and exceptional traits that have distinguished the very best of the legal profession in Nigeria.

The Rising Stars are young lawyers who exemplify distinction and quality service delivery and demonstrate superior leadership, reputation, influence, stature and profile as Nigerian Lawyers. For details about the judges and other criteria for this award, please log on to www.esq-law.com/awards 

Nominees are drawn from both Local and International organisations including Law Firms, Companies, NGOs and Government and other Regulators. Selected winners will be considered on the basis of the criteria below:

Criteria

Age Requirements: The award is designed for lawyers who are who are age 40 and under as of October 30, 2021.

Practice and Geography Requirements: To qualify for this award, lawyers must be Nigerians or of Nigerian Decent. Nominee must be engaged in the full-time practice of law at a law firm, company, government agency or non-profit and are based anywhere in the world. Nominee must be under 40 by October 30th 2021.

Deadline for Nomination:

Successful Applicants: Successful applicants will be young lawyers with track records of success in significant client matters in a particular practice area or category. These lawyers will also:

  • Earn the respect of more senior team members by successfully establishing early ownership of key roles in client matters – (i.e. handling a cross-examination in a significant trial, writing a winning brief in a high-stakes appeal, or leading a key aspect of a major transaction.)
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills in their law firms, companies and beyond, through firm leadership roles and through pro bono service to their communities.
  • Display new ways of thinking about their legal practices through innovation and/or thought leadership.
  • Demonstrate tangible support for and participation in diversity and inclusion efforts at their law firms, companies or non-profits.

Leadership and membership in other national and state speciality lawyer organizations is an advantage.

Rankings and ratings by leading national and international organizations is an advantage

Nomination Limits: An employer may nominate one lawyer. Individual lawyers may also self-nominate or nominate one lawyer colleague. A Corporate In-House Legal Department may nominate up to 3 individuals for the award. (Note: We will consider a maximum of two attorneys per law firm, company or non-profit.)
