The Cross Rivers State Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, has charged the Federal Government of Nigeria to invest money into the production of vaccines in Nigeria that can tackle the COVID-19 virus. His Excellency, Gov. Ayade, gave this charge while addressing newsmen in the state.
Speaking with newsmen, he noted that Nigeria has intelligent professors of virology currently lying waste in our universities, adding that, with the money we have now, we can set up a proper vaccine production plant — a first of its kind; a world-class vaccine.
“Africans should come to the realization that it is not vaccines, it is healthy living. Give people jobs. Don’t tell us about giving us HIV drugs in South Africa. Give us money; let us improve our agriculture, let everybody have a job, and live healthily, HIV virus will disappear. It is the same thing with coronavirus. It will sound very controversial, but they should know that I am talking from a sound intellectual and scientific background.
“The virus itself, the test method – the PCR method is an unreliable test method and it is never to be used for diagnostic purpose, but for research purposes. But PCR is being used, test kits are been produced, manufacturers are making cool money. If I test you and you are coronavirus-positive, what do I do? There is no vaccine today. There is no test, approved internal treatment protocol. However, they have also announced that some people have recovered. Why don’t you take their serum? Their serum shows that if they have recovered, they now have the antibody against the virus.
“So take their serum, do a synthesis of their serum, based on the electrophoresis, and then synthesis and mass-produce the vaccine. Why can’t the Federal Government start putting in money for research and reproduction of that vaccine in Nigeria? We are professors of virology, intelligent Nigerian professors of virology, lying waste in our universities. With the money we have now, we can set up a proper vaccine production plant. A first of its kind, world-class vaccines.”
He concluded that he teaches immunology in the university. That, they have discharged some of the people infected with the virus which means that those people are strong and healthy enough, that, the antibody they have generated can be extracted and to produce the active ingredients that respond to the coronavirus.
