The National Industrial Court (NIC) sitting in Yenagoa has struck out a suit filed by Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Bayelsa state chapter, challenging the powers of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) to superintend over the affairs of secondary school teachers.

Justice Bashir Attahiru-Alkali of the National Industrial Court in his ruling yesterday, upheld the preliminary objection raised by NUT counsel, Mr Stanley Damabide that ASUSS lacks legal status to institute such action as it was not a registered union.

In its originating summon, ASUSS had asked the court to stop NUT from deducting the union dues from salaries of secondary school teachers because they had lost confidence in the union.

Reacting to the ruling, the Bayelsa State chairman of Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, Mr Oyienemi Eberedeni expressed dissatisfaction over the ruling, saying they would appeal the judgment.
