CIRCUMSTANCES UNDER WHICH STUDENTS OF MEDICAL SCHOOLS MAY POSSESS AND DISSECT THE BODY OF A DECEASED PERSON.

In Nigeria, it is lawful for any teacher or Medical practitioner employed in any Medical school or student attending a course of study at such school or the superintendent of such school to possess and dissect the body of any deceased person (Cadaver) for anatomical training or medical research, provided such deceased person either in writing at any time during his life, or verbally in the presence of two or more witnesses during the illness whereof he died directed that his body be examined anatomically.

NB: Provision must be made to decently bury such person immediately after the anatomical examination is conducted.

SEE SECTIONS 4, 6 and 8(b) and (c) OF THE ANATOMY ACT.

Students in medical school study and dissect cadavers as a part of their training, to provide them knowledge of the basic functions of human body parts.

Surgeons also dissect and examine cadavers before surgical procedures on living patients to identify any possible deviations within the surgical area of interest.

For a cadaver to be viable and ideal for anatomical study and dissection, the body must be refrigerated or the preservation process must begin within 24 hours of death.

In 1827, in Scotland, a number of people were murdered, and the bodies were sold to medical schools for research purposes.
