The President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration took its fight against corruption a step further with the signing of Transfer of Sentenced Persons Agreement with Macao.

Nigeria commenced the journey to enacting the agreement in August 2018, when the Federal Executive Council directed the Attorney-General and the Minister of Justice, to structure the agreement for signing by the President.

The Macao Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China is an autonomous territory in the south coast of China, which used to be Portuguese Tributary until 1999.

A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, said the assent has finally put the agreement in effect.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has assented to the Instrument of Ratification of the Agreement on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons between the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China.

“This is sequel to the Federal Executive Council Conclusion of August 1, 2018, which approved and directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to prepare the Instrument of Ratification of the above Agreement for the President’s signature.

“President Buhari’s assent formally executes the Agreement”, the statement said.
