Prominent activist and co-convener of the #BringBackOurGirls movement, Aisha Yesufu, has openly criticised Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi over his recent comments on the 2012 Occupy Nigeria protests against fuel subsidy removal under former President Goodluck Jonathan.
In a video uploaded to YouTube on Thursday, Yesufu expressed strong disagreement with Obi’s statement that there was “no need to protest” during Jonathan’s administration when fuel prices rose from N87 to N120 per litre.
“First of all, I’m going to start with where Mr Peter Obi said there was no need to protest during Jonathan’s time. I think that’s a very wrong allusion to have — like there’s no need to protest,” Yesufu stated.
She stressed that protest is an essential part of democracy, irrespective of who holds power. “Let’s look at countries in other parts of the world where they are doing very well. People are protesting every day. There’s never a time where there’s no need to protest,” she said.
Yesufu warned that should Obi assume office, he must be ready to face public dissent if necessary. “If Mr Obi thinks he’s going to get into office and people will not protest no matter how good he is, then he should drop that,” she added.
Addressing Obi’s reference to fuel pricing, Yesufu pointed out that the protests during Jonathan’s tenure were valid because they were responding to the reality at the time — not a predicted future.
“What Peter Obi needs to understand, and what everybody needs to understand is that, at that time, people were protesting against N120. The N900 of today was in the future. Nobody protests for the future,” she explained.
Yesufu concluded that, in hindsight, “If there was any time a protest should have happened, it was during Jonathan.”
