Isa Salihu, the state Commissioner for Livestock Development, disclosed to news men. He said the development was in line with the Federal Government’s effort to establish grazing reserves in the interested states to forestall clashes between farmers and herdsmen. Such clashes have caused the death of thousands of people across the country. “We have 72 grazing reserves in the state, out of which 30 are already gazetted’, said Mr. Salihu. “Some 5,000 hectares of land was allocated to Federal Government for the establishment of National Grazing reserves. “And the state government is willing to allocate more additional lands for the programme.” The Commissioner said it was unfortunate that livestock departments of federal, state and local government levels in the country were totally neglected. “Long time neglect of the livestock sectors is the cause of frequent conflicts between farmers and cattle rearers we are now experiencing in the country. “The only solution to the problem is the establishment of permanent grazing reserves and ranches where the animals would be restricted from roaming,” he said. Mr. Salihu said Adamawa planned to diversify its internal revenue generation towards meat, milk, and other dairy products.]]>
