The Planning Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ohafia Branch, 2019 annual Law Week has unveiled the programme of event which would hold between Monday 5th to 9th August 2019 with the theme: “Local Government Autonomy in Nigeria: Political Myth or Constitutional Reality”.

In a briefing on Tuesday, with TheNigerialawyer(TNL), the Chairman of the branch, Dave N. Okwun-Kalu said that the law week would be most memorable in the history of the branch and that this year’s theme for the lecture centres on a trending national issue and the resulting discourse promises to be beneficial to all.

Okwun-Kalu further noted that the law week would feature many of the trademark events such as a Fitness walk/Health checks for members, Public enlightenment, Visit to Federal Prisons Arochukwu (for pro bono services), Courtesy call/Interaction, Award nights and so others.

The law week is billed for Chief Umeh Kalu SAN Bar Centre, High Court Complex, Ohafia.

Hon. Justice O. A. K. Ogwe, Chief Judge of Abia State is the Chairman of the event while Prof. U. U. Chukwumaeze (SAN) will give the Keynote speech.

The technical sessions, which would attract a rich and distinguished faculty of speakers and panelists with formidable resumes to match, would cover the sub-themes

  • Impact of financial autonomy of LGAs on development in Nigeria;
  • Elected or caretaker LGA Administration in Nigeria: Dictatorial or Constitutional;
  • Is NFIU Guidelines a fight against corruption?
  • 20 years of Democracy in Nigeria has our LGAS benefitted?

The Director NFIU, Modibbo R. Hamman Tukur, Immediate past 2nd Vice President of NBA, Monday Ubani, Esq., Chairman NULGE and other notable legal personalities on the bench and in the bar in Abia State shall be discussants and equally present the sub-themes so all questions on Local Government Administration in Nigeria especially as concerns the burning issue of autonomy for local governments shall be addressed.

The activities for the Ohafia Branch 2019 Law Week are scheduled as follows;
Monday 5th August – Friday 9th August
Monday 5th August – Fitness walk/Health checks for members
Tuesday 6th August – Public enlightenment
Wednesday 7th August – Courtesy call/Interaction with the Hon. Chief Judge, Presiding Judge Ohafia Division, Local Government Chairman, Brigade Commander and other service chiefs in Ohafia, etc
Thursday 8th August – Visit to Federal Prisons Arochukwu (for pro bono services led by the Human Rights Committee)
Friday 9th August – Lecture/Awards
