Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has dismissed claims that his recent trip to Turkey was an attempt to flee Nigeria following threats by U.S. President Donald Trump to take action against terrorists allegedly killing Christians.

Photos of Gumi in Turkey had sparked widespread speculation on social media, with many suggesting that the cleric, who has been seen in past photos with bandits, fled to avoid possible U.S. military intervention.

An X user, @KizyUzoma, wrote, “Nigeria’s terrorist spokesman Sheikh Gumi reportedly flees to Turkey. Finally, Gumi has fled, leaving behind his terrorist sympathisers. The fear of President Trump.”

@GeneralSnow_ posted, “So Gumi don run go Turkey? Ok na. He passed through our immigration abi? Ok na.”

@VivianRora added, “Gumi has fled to Turkey, leaving behind wassaping and other terrorist sympathisers. The fear of Trump.”

However, Gumi, who remains in Turkey and has been granting media interviews, clarified that his trip had been planned long before Trump’s remarks.

He shared on Facebook: “I got my Turkish visa on the 16th of October 2025, and Trump’s irresponsible tweet lying about ‘Christian genocide’ in Nigeria was on the 1st of November 2025. Yet, because of melancholy, they concoct lies and believe them. Trump has no power over us; it’s just your sick mind bowing down to him in worship.”

In another post, the cleric wrote, “After the fog has cleared, the alleged ‘Christian genocide’ in Nigeria is all about a well-drawn-out plan to attack Sharia Law and promote Islamophobia.”

Gumi further accused Trump of spreading falsehoods that have emboldened “unpatriotic, hateful citizens” who wish no good for Nigeria. “We can’t be deceived anymore,” he added.

The cleric also claimed that reports of mass killings of Christians in the Middle Belt were fabricated.

He said, “A doctor wrote me: Do you know that some Middle Belt Christian groups are now staging fake mass killings? They are burying empty coffins and recording the process as if real victims were killed, just to push the narrative of a Christian genocide. This is desperation at its peak. A disgrace. Manipulating information just to provoke hatred and international sympathy.”

Urging Nigerians to reject such claims, Gumi concluded, “Trump lied before that Israel attacked Iran unilaterally. These people are dangerously deceptive. Continue to trust them at your own peril.”
