The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has insisted it will continue preparations for its national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, despite a fresh Federal High Court order barring the exercise.

Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi described the latest court ruling as “a waste of time,” stressing that the party was guided by a subsisting Supreme Court judgment affirming that political parties have exclusive authority over their internal affairs.

Abdullahi’s remarks followed Tuesday’s ruling by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which restrained the PDP from holding the convention. The order contradicted a prior Oyo State High Court ruling that had cleared the party to proceed, a development critics described as conflicting court actions.

“The judgment is a waste of time. We have gone too far to be asked to stop. We are not a political party founded by a court of law but by Nigerians, and we are expected to listen to Nigerians, not procured judgments,” Abdullahi said. “We have a subsisting Supreme Court judgment confirming the party’s exclusive right over its internal affairs. There’s no stopping us.”

Justice Lifu’s injunction was sought by former Jigawa State governor and national chairmanship aspirant Sule Lamido, who alleged he was denied the opportunity to purchase the party’s nomination form. The judge cited non-compliance with internal PDP processes, including the failure to publish mandatory notices and observe the 21-day requirement before the convention. He said the balance of convenience favored Lamido and emphasized adherence to the rule of law under Section 6 of the 1999 Constitution.

The ruling adds to a series of conflicting court orders affecting the PDP. On October 31, Justice James Omotosho had also barred the convention over alleged irregularities in 14 states, while the Oyo State High Court later cleared the party to proceed pending the hearing of a separate suit filed by PDP member Folahan Malomo Adelabi.

Reacting to the judicial developments, PDP National Executive Committee member Timothy Osadolor warned that persistent court interventions could force the party to constitute an interim management committee to run its affairs. He criticized some judges for issuing “judgments for pay” and called on the National Judicial Council to intervene to protect judicial integrity.

“It’s not yet dark for the PDP; there’s still light. But governors pushing for unilateral decisions must come down from their high horses and work with other stakeholders. Time is running out, but it’s not impossible to resolve this crisis,” Osadolor said.
