The visions of the forum are to promote and protect the welfare and interest of young lawyers; enhance the professional development of young lawyers; promote and support law reform initiatives in Nigeria; promote timely and affordable access to justice to indigent persons in Nigeria; promote the principles of rule of law and respect for human rights in Nigeria; create job opportunities for young lawyers and to explore and create opportunities for mentorship and pupilage for young lawyers. The forum seeks to achieve its vision through the various strategic committees: young lawyers empowerment & job creation committee, community development service committee, public enlightenment committee, international networking committee, career development/scholarship committee, dispute resolution committee, welfare and social security committee, ethics, advocacy and reforms committee, anti-corruption committee and access to justice committee. YLFN takes pride in being an independent network of vibrant and passionate young lawyers between 1-9 years post call and comprise of people who run with the visions of the forum as stated above. YLFN does not collect dues from members and its interest does not conflict with the Nigerian Bar Association. Our cardinal function is to help the average young lawyer attain professional excellence which is in line with international best practices in overseas jurisdictions where the young lawyers forum is an independent body that liases with stakeholders in the legal profession to advance the frontiers of legal practice for the young wigs. In view of the forthcoming elections of the Nigerian Bar Association in July 2018, YLFN is not unmindful of the need for the welfare of young lawyers to be prioritized in the campaign for the NBA Presidency. This is against the backdrop that young lawyers in Nigeria form 60 percent of the voting capacity of the bar. We have sent invitations to all NBA Presidential Aspirants for a National Debate when the ban on campaign is lifted for each aspirant to present his manifesto and tell us how he intends to tackle the age long neglect of young lawyers in Nigeria and other myriads of problems bedeviling the NBA. The objectives of the NBA Presidential Debate shall be to raise the needed awareness on the challenges facing young lawyers and to examine the manifestos of each aspirant. The electorates will also have the opportunity to meet and interact with the candidates that seek to represent them at the National level and make their demands known to them. But there is an existing caveat in this regard. YLFN as a neutral body is not endorsing any candidate for the election but will create the opportunity for electorates to make an informed decision as to who they will vote. The Presidential Debate will be all encompassing touching all issues affecting the legal profession in Nigeria. This is the maiden edition and it promises to be stimulating, captivating, educating and interactive. We enjoin all lawyers who have the interest of the bar at heart to support this professional change project. The Bar community in Nigeria belongs to everyone called to bar and enrolled at the Supreme Court of Nigeria. We should not be misled by beautifully prepared speeches to sell our votes and conscience. Rise up one. Rise up all. Dated 19th June 2018 David C. Ibeawuchi, Esq.
