THE police in Edo State have arraigned a 37-year-old woman, Esther Joseph, before an Egor Magistrates’ Court in Benin, for allegedly stealing the sum of N478,000 from one Josephine Alu and 29 others.
Joseph was arraigned on Tuesday on one-count bothering on stealing.
She was said to have committed the offence on December 14 at about 7:35pm.
It was learnt that she had in possession the said amount, being the financial contributions of the victims, but later absconded with the money from her residence.
The police prosecutor, Corporal Ayo Austin, told the court that the accused person allegedly stole the sum of money and fraudulently converted same to her own use.
The charge read, “That you, Esther Joseph, on December 14, 2015, at about 19:35 hours at 21, Nosa Yaba Street, off NTA road, Benin City, in the Egor Magisterial District, did steal the sum of N478,000 only, property of one Mrs. Josephine Alu and 29 others which you fraudulently converted to your own use and, thereby, committed an offence contrary and punishable under Section 390(8)(b) of the Criminal Code Cap 48, Vol. II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable in Edo State.”
But Joseph pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against her.
The presiding magistrate, F. E. Akhere, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 and a surety.
The case was later adjourned till January 19, 2016.
