A woman was at home when she heard someone knock at the door. She went to the door and saw a man standing there. He asked the woman ‘Do you have a vagina?’ She slammed the door in disgust.

The next morning she heard a knock at the door and it was the same man asking the woman ‘Do you have a vagina’? She slammed the door again.

Later that night when her husband got home, she told him what had happened for the last two days.
The husband told the wife in a loving and concerned voice, ‘Honey, I am taking tomorrow off to be home just in case this guy shows up again.’

The next morning they heard a knock at the door and both run for the door. The husband said to the wife in a whispered voice, ‘Honey, I’m going to hide behind the door and listen and if it is the same guy I want you to answer yes to the question because I want to see where he is going with it’.

She nodded ‘yes’ to her husband and opened the door. Sure enough, the man asked the same question. ‘Do you have a vagina’? ‘Yes’ she replied.

The man replied: ‘Good. Would you mind telling your husband to leave my wife’s alone and start using yours?’
So, here we are this week.

Sexual predators
My 14-year old niece was hit on twice in the spate of five minutes by two old men at an ice-cream parlour in Abuja. In fact, she told one of them who asked for her number that she was only 14, and he said, ‘Stop lying about your age.’ But, she is indeed 14 years old notwithstanding that she may have a respectable pair of boobs.

Another young girl was accosted by a middle-aged man at a shopping mall. He approached her with compliments about her beauty and then asked her out on a date. But, all this while, his wife and their two small children popped into a shop! Seriously! Can you imagine what happens when she goes away on holiday and he is left on his own? How depraved and morally deficient?

This is particularly of concern when you hear further tales of rich and powerful men who usurp their positions for sex. Women are regularly assaulted at the work place and at job interviews.

Take the plight of nurses for example. Nurses are regularly asked out and harassed for sexual favours by men old enough to be their fathers. The fact is that many of these men are well passed their sell by date and seemingly happily married: some with great grandchildren. But, just because the nurse has taken care of them, some feel they are entitled to see the nurse’s knickers too.

Some men have the wrong misconception that nurses are there for their pleasure and so trouble them for sex through different guises. Some use sweet tongues, their position and money. This puts the weak nurses at a huge disadvantage and moral obligation to accede to these immoral requests. Because, once you have taken the devil’s money, you may have to pay with your body.
But, even the poor are not left behind.

House-girls are often raped and impregnated by Madam’s husband leading to serious problems for the young girls and further hardship in the family. Many of them as young as 14 and 15 years old have their lives ruined by teenage pregnancy and unwanted babies.

In the news
It was in the news recently that a 39-year old man defiled a 12-year old girl. Apparently, he confessed that he lured her with a packet of biscuits. Further, he had done the same to her older sister! This case and many others like this are really troubling. Our newspapers and social media are rife with daily sordid details of men molesting women and children in Nigeria.

This begs the question, ‘What is wrong with the Nigerian man with regards to sex? Also, ‘Are Nigerian men especially so horny and addicted to skirts? Why this interest in children and teenagers when there are experienced, grown women around? What is wrong with their wives’ vagina?”

My take
The spate of sexual molestation, harassment, rape and even murder of women demands some serious government action. Someone in government must take responsibility to highlight this social malady. Perhaps, we need to create a separate Ministry of RAPE and SEXUAL ASSAULTS.
The Police must be active and take up the challenge of public prosecution of offenders. Let us know who they are, their family, where they live, state of origin and then the punishment. The punishment must be sufficiently severe enough to deter others.

I firmly believe shaming their whole family may help in some little ways to stem the tide. Please, send me your thoughts via email and let us explore the apparent rampant paedophilia and sexual molestation syndrome in Nigeria. It is our social and moral responsibility to stop this.

After all, it’s my niece today; it may be your daughter tomorrow!
