Reading the Judgment which lasted over three hours by one of the Tribunal judges, Justice Suleiman Yusuf said the election of Bashir cannot stand because he did not score the lawful majority votes in the March 28 national assembly election.

Elections Petition Tribunal sitting in Jalingo, Taraba state capital on Wednesday sacked a People Democratic Party (PDP) Senator representing Central Senatorial District Bashir Marafa.

Reading the Judgment which lasted over three hours by one of the Tribunal judges, Justice Suleiman Yusuf said the election of Bashir cannot stand because he did not score the lawful majority votes in the March 28 national assembly election.

The tribunal further submitted that the petitioners in the case filed by the All Progressives Congress Candidate (APC) Alhaji Yusuf Abubakar Yusuf had proven his case beyond reasonable doubt and therefore should be returned as the candidate that scored the majority lawful votes at the polls.

The Tribunal said the alleged cancellation of results at collation centre after the presiding officer had announced same result at the polling unit contravened the electoral law while the non-inclusion of the results of 16 polling units where elections were conducted and announced was also against the law.

After re-collation of the results, the tribunal said the APC candidate Yusuf Abubakar scored 66,097 votes; Marafa Bashir of PDP scored 64,356 votes while Abubakar Tutare of SDP scored 33,489 votes.
