The House of Representatives on Tuesday directed it’s committee on Human Rights to investigate an alleged abduction and marriage of a 14 years old Nigerian and report to the House within four weeks.
Member representing Ahiazu Mbaise/Ezinihitte federal constituency, Rapheal Nnana Igbokwe, in a motion under matter of urgent public importance noted that report of the alleged abduction of one Miss. Habiba Isa from Warkaza community in Kundun Kankara local government area of Katsina state prohibits section 21 of the Child Rights Act.
Igbokwe noted. that marriage of a minor and any marraige so contracted is null and void and of no effect whatsoever.
Acording to him, the alleged marraige was conducted without consent of her parents, who havve been reported to be under threat and harrasment over thier request for the release of thier daughter.
“The situation has chased untold psychological painn to members of her family, who are hopeless and crying fro help, if nothing is done, this trend may continue which posses potential threat to peace and unity of our dear country,” he added.
The Emirate had denied the allegation that Habiba was forced into a marriage with one Jamilu, and claimed that the lady voluntarily embraced Islam.
The Emirate stated that Habiba indicated her interest in marrying Jamilu, who is from the same area with her, and that the Emirate Council married the love birds and a dowry of N50,000 was paid.
