Nigeria is an oil producing state that depends mostly on it, as the major source of income. This has made petroleum engineering and Oil and Gas Law, areas of interest in the Nigerian Universities for young undergraduates. Astronomy is one area of specialization that most academics have not really given much attention, because of the lack of scientific knowledge with respect to outer space in this part of the world. However, for the legal community, it is not so. Over the years, the Prof. Manfred Lach Space Moot Court competition had been organized where Law students all over the world are invited to write written memorials and make oral presentations for and against issues raised on hypothetical facts. The Niger Delta University and the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile Ife represented Nigeria in the last two editions, where the OAU team emerged winner in the Africa round in Pretoria, South Africa in the last two rounds and thereafter represented Africa in the world level in Mexico, where they met the the American Continent represented by a Canadian Institution and won them, and proceeded to the finals, where they emerged first runner for the first time in the history of the competition in the world, being that no African University has ever achieved such feat. This year, the Niger Delta University, the Lagos State University and the Obafemi Awolowo University will be representing Nigeria in this important competition having qualified for the Africa round via written memorials. It is quite surprising that schools from Nigeria that do not do much of astronomical studies excel so well in a competition of such, far better that other countries such as the South Africa that have severally been represented by the University of Pretoria. There seem to be a bright future of space exploration and Space Law practice in Nigeria. Space Law is a very important area of International Law that invokes the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice and the International criminal Court. The introduction of Space Law in the Niger Delta University shows that Outer Space awareness in the legal community has formally begun in Nigeria. The move by the prestigious university in the Oil Rich region is a good one as it would expose students to international treaties such as the Liability Convention of 1973, the Registration Agreement of 1976, the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, the return and Rescue agreement of 1968, etc, and how the opportunities in this area of Law can be explored by young Nigerians in the Legal profession. It is on this note that other Faculties of law are hereby encouraged to follow suit.]]>
