* Unnecessary spending, the cause of NBA inability to pay 10 percent PF to branches, Mr. Afam Osigwe fires NBA president Mr. Mazi Afam Osigwe, the immediate past General Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has made known in a reply, statements that can be said to contain revelations perhaps not known by many in the Legal profession. In this revelations he stated that the just concluded 2017 Annual General Conference cost a total sum of 1.3 billion Naira. However, before now, no AGC budget has exceeded 300 million. According to him, the expenses made by the current administration is too much to behold. He noted that the NBA spends millions on just on hotel bills monthly. He also noted that the NBA monthly travel expenses alone is estimated at 30million Naira which is not proper. He also revealed as well that Mr. AB Mahmoud SAN, official aides also earn huge pay from NBA purse bigger than the pay of the NBA staff put together. Mr. Afam also complained about the procurement process in NBA as it is not believed to be transparent. He therefore noted his worries about corruption in the system. Mr. Afam whislt speaking in respect to stamp, stated that the NBA Paid 45 million Naira to an Ibadan printer without NEC approval and yet, the printer failed to produce stamp. According to him this was despite the fact that the NBA had already contracted STRATAFLEX, thus supposedly breaching the contract. The learned wig also alarmed that NBA has not paid its Contractors. According to him: ” This was notwithstanding the fact that the AB Mahmoud administration collected 85 million from government agencies for 2016 practicing fees due to Alegeh administration.” TheNigerialawyer recalls that a statement supposedly attributed to the President of the NBA, A.B. Mahmoud SAN was made affirming that the current administration is unable to pay the 10 percent of practicing fees to branches because of the debt owned by the previous administration. The revelations given by Mr. Afam seem to be have defeated the facts believed to be stated by the present administration. According to him, the Alegeh administration paid a backlog of 2013 and 2014 practicing fees remittances to branches but owed 2016 remittances. Not withstanding, the that of 2013 and 2014 were cleared. Thus the Alegeh Administration neither left unprecedented millions of naira nor a high debt profile. ”Alegeh administration did not leave unprecedented millions of naira but also did not leave any high profile case behind. The administration further prides itself of for generating a landmark revenue in millions for the association. The adminstration also spent a total sum of N788,936,811 in the NBA House (a major priority project of the administration) to the future of our the Association . Contractors are also owed some millions of naira”, he said. In other to know facts from the other side, TheNigerialawyer in a chat with the General Secretary, Isiaka Abiola Olagunju, declined commenting on the alleged revelations and said they will not join issues with the past General Secretary, Mazi Afam Osigwe. While Prof. Konyisola Ajayi SAN, Chairman Conference Committee, 2017 when contacted said he is not in a good place to reply to the said revelations. He in his opinion believes that the NBA president is in a better position to do so. As at the time of filing this report, the NBA president is yet to make any comment on the so called revelations.]]>
