Some old Customary Court judges in the Lagos State judiciary were, on Thursday, replaced with younger ones as the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Funmilayo Atilade, swore in 107 new judges of the customary courts.

The new judges comprises 19 presidents and 88 members and are to preside in 52 local governments and local council development areas in the state.

The Executive Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Mrs Ayodele Odugbesan, said sections 3 and 13 of the Customary Court Law, 2011, empower the chief judge to make the appointment.

In her speech, Atilade said the new judges were appointed to replace the current customary judges in the state and urged them to be responsible and live above board.

“I congratulate you on your appointments. The present customary judges, having occupied the position and served well, it is important to replace the ageing ones or those who have died,” she said.

“The customary courts have jurisdiction to administer justice on road traffic issues, environmental issues and some offences. I admonish all of you to be diligent and passionate. You must be good listeners, humble, above board and have the knowledge of the law of the land. In all, you must remember there is the ultimate judge.”

She further said the state would soon establish a Customary Court of Appeal to replace the magistrates’ court which presently handles customary court appeal.
