Imo State Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Paschal O. Nnadi, says the state judiciary remains committed to partnering with the legislature and other stakeholders in actualizing all viable plans to decongest the prisons in the state.

Justice Nnadi made the promise when he played host to members of the House of Assembly Committee on Judiciary in his office.

“There is no doubt that the prisons are congested. The Judiciary is very interested in partnering with relevant stakeholders to decongest the prisons, within the ambit of the law”, Justice Nnadi said.

While informing his visitors that he had already commenced jail deliveries since he came on board, Justice Nnadi also disclosed that his visits were instructive.

“It was noticed that some of the inmates had spent more time in prison than they would have stayed, if properly convicted for their alleged crimes. Some of the inmates also had minor cases that could have been instantly handled, while others had major cases that will take longer time to dispense”, Justice Nnadi said.

Speaking earlier, the leader of the delegation and House Committee Chairman on Judiciary, Mr. Innocent Arthur Egwim, said they were on the visit to plead for the decongestion of the prisons.

He said that the legislature was interested in a workable synergy that would ensure quick dispen- sation of justice and rule of law.

Egwim also promised that they would use the instrumentality of the House to project and protect basic issues that border on the welfare of the judicial personnel.
