The question to be asked here goes, is the reality of the legal practice intendem with all the pictures painted in the Nigerian Law School, of the status and “earnings” of a lawyer, which pictures are strongly engraved in the minds of the aspiring legal practitioners? The answer to the above question will be in the negative for a lawyer that keeps to terms with the reality of the law practice in Nigeria. A lawyer, having experience in the practice of law in Nigeria, knows and seen that, the reality of the law practice is by far beyond what is taught within the four walls of the law school auditorium. The learning and struggle for survival began with the award of the call to bar certificate. That is when on the one hand, your family, friends, enemies, and the generality of people that may not have fallen within the listed categories, will have a different look at you, the time when you have a slip of tongue and be excused, having no solutions to problems (financial and otherwise) are nearly over, the expectations from the left, right and centre of your circle will be above the threshold. Whereas on the other hand, the market for the law practice is by day saturating, the only chance for you to live and continue to hold on to the rope is when you are creative and able to blend and exploit the advancement in technology to your advantage. To the new wigs here comes an opportunity, you are coming out to the world of practice when technology is carrying the day. I dont mean to scare you, but do you know as at today a robot lawyer is created with all the skills of lawyering equal to that of any lawyer if not better? It is good to have the knowledge of the law, appear smart but above all creativity is the language the legal profession speaks nowadays. While in law school, you were exposed to alot of skills that will fetch you money in the course of your law practice. Mark you, no body guarantees when, where and how that fotune comes your way if at all its forth coming. Life comes in stages that are in no way skip-able, you are the creater your destiny. Be creative while adhering strictly to the ethics and ethicates of the profession. Welcome to the Bar. Wishing you the best in your undertakings. Auwal Ya’u Esq.
