The Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, gave the confirmation on sunday When asked if the joint resolution had been communicated to the President, he said, “Yes, the concurrence by the National Assembly on the invitation to Mr. President has been communicated.” He however did not respond to a question as to whether his principal had fixed a date for his appearance. The Senate and the House of Representatives had resolved to invite the President to address a joint session of the National Assembly and explain what his administration was doing to take Nigeria out of its present economic doldrums. It was subsequently gathered that in furtherance to this, the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, who is the Chairman of the National Assembly, followed it up with a letter urging President Buhari to pick a date for the event. The House of Representatives had on September 22, 2016, resolved to constitute a special ad hoc committee to liaise with the Senate with a view to inviting Buhari to brief a joint session of the National Assembly on the current economic downturn. The House took the decision following a motion moved by a member, Olayiwola Kazzim, entitled, “Urgent Need to Address the Economic Downturn in Nigeria.” The representatives, had after a two-hour debate by roughly 30 lawmakers, agreed that Buhari should brief the legislature on the efforts being made to take the country out of recession. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, had urged Buhari to convene an emergency economic conference.]]>
