The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN)

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has called out its members to get ready for a nationwide action to protest what it described as disobedience to court judgement by the executive in respect of the financial autonomy of the Judiciary.

Arising from its Emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, the union also directed all the branches and chapters to convey emergency congresses, with a view of mobilising them for further directives.

It would be recalled that JUSUN had obtained a Court Judgement in its favour after two years of legal battle over interpretation of section 121 (3) and other sections of the 1999 constitution which placed emphasis on the financial autonomy of the judiciary.
However there was no appeal against the judgement, nor did the executive implement the court order.

In a communiqué jointly signed by the President, Comrade Marwan Mustapha Adamu and General secretary, Isaiah M. Adetola, JUSUN reaffirmed it’s condemnation over the illegal arrest and invasion of the privacy of Justices of Supreme Court, Federal High Court as well as state High Court.

Accordingly, the union vowed to resist any of such action by the security agencies without following due process of the law of the Federation.

JUSUN said the union is total in support of the fight against corruption of the present administration, but however said two wrong can’t make a right.

The communiqué reads in part” NEC in session condemn the illegal arrest and inversion of the privacy of the justices of Supreme Court, Federal High Court and State High Court.

“NEC in Session urged judicial officers and staff to remain firm and resolute in the discharge of their duties without any fear of intimidation.

“NEC in session hold that disobedience to court order and non-funding of the judiciary in the spirit of the constitution as a monumental corruption, and we call on the security agencies to arrest and prosecute those in breach and call for the full financial autonomy of the Judiciary both at the State and National.”
