Judiciary workers from various African countries, under the aegis of Confederation of African Judiciary Workers Union, have resolved to advocate the entrenchment of the principle of separation of powers, judiciary reforms and contribute to the effective justice delivery in their various countries. This is contained in a communiqué jointly signed by the CAJWU’s President, Mr Marwan Adamu, and the union’s secretary, Mr Vincent Makondo, following their meeting which held between July 16 and 17, 2018 in Kigali, Rwanda. The CAJWU’s President, Adamu, is the National President of the umbrella body of all judiciary workers in Nigeria – the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria. CAJWU stated in its communiqué that its meeting was part of its efforts “to make tangible and effective contributions to the enhancement of service and justice delivery in Africa.” It charged its members to contribute to effective justice delivery in their domains instead of “manufacturing excuses and erecting defences against the real or perceived public perceptions of the judiciary.” “Sadly, the perception of the judiciary as ‘the last hope of the common man’ continues to be on the downward horizontal trajectory. “Corruption, conservatism and inefficiency have shaped and sharpened some of the perceptions, real or imagined,” the body lamented. It expressed its resolve to “inculcate ethical conducts, professionalism and efficiency in the administration of justice,” while highlighting the roles that its members must play to help the African Union. It stated, “We are also enthused that judiciary workers have real and strong roles to play in the attainment of the African Union Agenda 2063.”]]>
