They spoke in the Abuja chamber of commerce and Industry on Tuesday, the 12th September, 2017 during the launching of her subsidiary- Abuja Chamber of Commerce Dispute Resolution Centre (ACCDRC). The event was held at the Abuja Chamber of commerce and industry, Abuja International Trade Fair Complex, Km 8, Airport Road, Abuja. Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, CON, SAN, FCIArb (UK), Board of Chairman, ACCDRC, in his remarks spoke on the need of resolving disputes through ADR mechanism, with special emphasis on trade and commercial disputes which ultimately is the reason for setting up the ACCDRC. Chiarman of the occasion, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Walter Nkanu Onnoghen, was represented by Hon. Justice Adejumo. He said that Arbitration is recognized all over the world and people are quickly imbibing the precepts of Arbitration everywhere in resolving disputes. He further said that His Lordship, Hon. Justice Walter Nkanu Onnoghen, is in firm support of Arbitration in Nigeria as a sound means of solving disputes in Nigeria. Hon. Justice Adejumo therefore enjoins members to make adequate use of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce Dispute Resolution Centre and enjoy the benefits to be derived from it. Speaking further Justice Adejumo asserted that: “it is only the National Industrial Court by virtue of the provision of the 1999 Constitution of FRN as Amended in Section 254C(3) has been recognized to have an Arbitration Panel and that’s a plus for it”. A Senior Advovate of Nigeria (SAN) Chief Bayo Ojo, Chairman, International Centre for Arbitration and Mediation, Abuja (ICAMA) in highlighting the importance of ADR in resolving disputes also said that “ADR is quite attractive from the normal and conventional courtroom experience.” To him: “it is an indispensable process for making social life peaceful.” Dispute resolution process resolves and checks conflicts which enables persons and groups to maintain co-operation”, he noted. However, the learned Silk stated that there are some drawbacks on ADR. To him, ADR does not fit all the gaps. It can’t be used in resolving certain disputes especially contentious issues like Land disputes. According to him: “ the informalities for Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanism is much easier; it saves time, it is less expensive, it involves parties participation, accuracy that has to be arrived at/ and or achieved and many others” He also presented the Rules of the ADRC which is the working document for the center. Mr.Tony Ejinkeonye, President, ACCI on the other hand briefly highlighted some of the duties and functions of the center and encouraged those present to become members of ACCI. Some dignitaries also graced the occasion such as: Mr. Elachi Agada, Past President of ICMC, Former Chairman, NBA Abuja Branch, Chief Emeka Obegolu, President, ICMC, secretary and board member ACCDRC, Vice president, ACCI, Dr. Billy Harry, Chairman, FOCCIMA and Chief Bayo Ojo SAN, representing Attorney General of the Federation, Hon. Abubakar Malami SAN, who was outside the shores of Nigeria on an official duty. Aisha Ado Abdullahi Esq (Director, ACCDRC) gave the vote of thanks after which the facility was unveiled.
